What a Week!

We had another wonderful week in 2nd grade!
The students shared their "Get to Know You" bags and learned more about each other!
We began doing word study this week. The class learned how to sort words according to spelling/sound patterns and do activities to practice writing them.

We also learned about what the Bible is and what it isn't. The students discovered the Bible is not a book of rules, but has rules in it so we know how God wants us to live. We learned that it is not a book of heroes and cool stories, but contains amazing stories of how God used people for his plan and stories to learn about who God is. We found that the Bible IS the story of God's Rescue Plan for His people. From beginning to end we will see God's great love for us and how we should live as a result of this. We also discussed the story of the wise and foolish builders from Matthew 7. We went outside to look at the foundation of the school and we talked about building our lives on the Rock - God and His Word! We also started learning our Bible memory verse for next week, Matthew 7:24 "If anyone hears my words AND obeys them, he is like a wise man who builds his house on a rock."

We also spent time learning how to become better readers and how to pick good-fit books We talked about how a good-fit book is like a pair of shoes. Just like a pair of shoes shouldn't be too big or too small, you shouldn't choose a book that is too hard or too easy. The book should be a good fit, have a purpose, and be interesting to us. When helping your child choose a book at home, use this acronym that we will be using in our classroom:
I *PICK
I pick the book
Purpose - Why do I want to read this?
Interest - Does it interest me?
Comprehend - Do I understand what I am reading?
Know - Do I know most of the words?

In Social Studies we began learning about the purpose of laws in a community. We will continue to learn the purpose of the government. In a few weeks we will be taking a field trip to the Lancaster County Courthouse where we will meet a judge and learn about his role in the community.

We had TWO birthdays this week and ONE lost tooth!!
We celebrated Gavin's eighth birthday on Monday and Hannah's eighth birthday on Tuesday.
